An Introduction to
(Introduction written by the Sacred Theatre Guild of Adidam) The Mummery Book, written by Adi Da Samraj, is a work of astonishing poetry and deeply evocative archetypal drama. It is not conventional drama, but transformative theatre of the Sacred. It is a deeply moving, heart-opening, archetypal story that is exquisitely poetic, truly humorous, wildly erotic, piercingly satirical, and devastatingly tragic. Finally, it is also the Illuminated restoration of Raymond Darling to his Divine Condition. By definition, a mummery is a "hypocritical, or pretentious ceremony or performance". This, according to Adi Da Samraj, is what human life amounts to without the Divine. The Mummery Book tells the story of Raymond Darling, his birth, his growth to manhood, his finding and losing of his beloved (Quandra), and his ultimate resolution of the heart-breaking "problem" of mortality. He goes through an extraordinary series of adventures and ordeals to penetrate every level of the world of "unenlightened existence", or all the crises necessary to re-Awaken to his own Divine Nature. The Mummery Book is groundbreaking Literature and theatre. It is a potent exploration, by means of allegory, of the actual process of Divine Enlightenment. This process, by the very nature of Reality Itself, awaits only our participation to begin. Whenever you watch The Mummery Book enacted, that process is initiated and intensified. Anyone who has already participated in a past enactment will tell you that The Mummery Book is not something that you can simply sit back and enjoy as you would a conventional play, as a merely passive observer. In a very real way, your emotional and psychic participation is part and parcel of the show. Ultimately, The Mummery Book is a demonstration of the Inherent Unity of all that arises, as it works on you from the inside out, awakening new sensitivity to your own real condition by use of universal metaphor and an utter restructuring of language as we know it. To whatever degree you participate in this enactment, your life is transformed. From Enlightenment to total human heartbreak and back again, without ever leaving the "one and only room"—this is the paradoxical journey you're invited to take in The Mummery Book.
