A Letter From The Artistic Director

The Mummery Book Enactment provides a unique and wonderful opportunity to participate in truly Sacred Art, whether one is part of the cast and crew or an audience member. Those who have watched, or helped to stage or support Mummery Book Enactments invariably experience the ecstatic ordeal that results when theatrical art is focused not on the self, but on the self-transcendence of the performer or participant in communion with the Divine, with the Spirit, with God.

Participating in The Mummery Book Enactment also provides an opportunity to participate in truly cooperative community. This cooperative venture requires the personal sacrifice and self-transcendence not only of each performer, but also from each person who donates energy or money to its creation. Approximately 180 people were directly involved in staging the most recent Mummery Book production, and 250 people contributed to it financially.

Despite the dramatic success of our Enactments, the support from within our community, and the positive response from those who attend, the Sacred Theatre Guild currently only has the financial capacity to stage one Enactment "season" per year, in rural Lake County, Northern California.

We are, however, dedicated to the realization of Adi Da Samraj's Vision of developing a full-time theatre company that can perform The Mummery Book Enactment, as well as other Sacred Art offerings, on a year-round basis. We constantly ask ourselves, how do we magnify our collective experience, talent, skill and resources so that we are able to achieve Adi Da's Vision for this Guild? How do we find the way to maintain the level of creativity and cooperation that we reach during the annual Enactment season throughout the whole year? How do we bring The Mummery Book Enactment to the world?

We hope this year to take the first step in this visionary expansion by taking The Mummery Book Enactment to a major urban center in the US (possibly Chicago). In addition, we would like to be able to offer educational seminars and workshops as well as other Sacred Arts offerings in cities around North America and Europe.

The primary magic ingredient that will enable the Sacred Theatre Guild to fulfill its vision is, of course, money. We have worked hard to generate revenues through product sales, fundraising, fees (for membership, training, and workshops, special events and artistic offerings), and, of course, through paid admissions to our annual Enactments. Unfortunately, at this time, our current revenue does not even cover the cost of keeping our office open year-around, let alone permit the development of a full-time theatre company.
